Iraq said its Air Force bombed Iran's main oil-export terminal in the Persian Gulf and an oil refinery in retaliation for the shelling of civilian targets in Iraqi territory. An Iraqi military communique said Iraq gave notice it would hit civilian targets in Iran if Iran continued to shell civilian targets in Iraqi territory.
Iranian forces shelled the southern town of Basra, Iraq's second-largest city , and the small northern border town of Penjwin in the mountains of Kurdistan, it said.
