UN environment meeting seeks worldwide effort
| Nairobi, Kenya
A 10-day special meeting of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) adopted a ''Nairobi Declaration,'' which indicated satisfaction at progress made in safeguarding the environment since 1972, but expressed anxiety about the future. The meeting was called to review UNEP's achievements since it was established in Stockholm in 1972. Delegates noted growing environmental awareness, but also noted continuing shrinkage of forests, deterioration of soil and water, atmospheric changes, sea pollution, and the careless use of toxic chemicals.
