Columbia landing site switched to White Sands

As the countdown began for the March 29 launching of the space shuttle Columbia, the March 29 landing site for the shuttle was switched from Edwards Air Force Base in California's Mojave Desert to White Sands, New Mexico, because heavy rains at the air base made the three unpaved runways unusable, officials at the Kennedy Space Center said.
