Colombians vote amid tight security

A trumpet call in Bogota opened Colombia's election which leftist guerrillas urged the population to boycott. The election, seen as a test of civilian rule, came after a week of bombings and assassinations designed to scare voters from the polls.

On election eve, President Julio Cesar Turbay Ayala appealed to the 14 million eligible voters to abandon their traditional apathy and turn out at the polls. Troops frisked voters.
