NAACP mounts drive against cuts in programs

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is organizing a massive congressional lobbying campaign against President Reagan's plan to cut government spending on social programs, executive director Benjamin Hooks said Monday. He told a press conference the administration's economic proposals would "wreak havoc and devastation at the bottom end of our society" if they were enacted. He said the NAACP would mobilize its forces through 1,700 branches around the country to defeat the budget cuts.

More than 200 NAACP representatives were beginning a three-day "legislative mo bilization conference" in Washington.
