Murdoch taking over at Times Newspapers

Australian publisher Rupert Murdoch announced that he would become proprietor of Times Newspapers today (Feb. 13) after reaching formal agreement with trade unions on reductions in the work force.

Mr. Murdoch told a press conference the unions had accepted the loss of 563 full-time jobs from the 4,000-member labor force and were dispensing with the services of 100 part-time workers.

On the future of The Times, the Sunday Times, and the three academic supplements, Mr. Murdoch said: "We expect to make them better and greater newsp apers than ever."
