Unboxed-in man
It's a familiar circus spectacle. A troupe of clowns pour out of a miniature house, not half the size of a phone booth. After a wild chase around center ring, they pile back in. There's no way they could be stuffed into that tiny space. Still, they all make it. What pandemonium! And what pointed mimicry of human existence. Man boxed in by severe limitations and walls.
Christianly scientific illumination, above circus illusion, spotlights a wholly different scene where man is not on a finite plane at all. Closely following the teachings of Christ Jesus, Christian Science shows the finite view of man and life to be illusory. And it goes on from there to reveal the specific yet infinite nature of man. Seen in the light of scientific illumination, man is the idea of God, Mind. He is limitless, living on a spiritual, unconfined plane. Not one shred of matter, so not one shred of finity, enters the picture.
The possibilities for freeing human existence are endless as we more and more understand these basic truths and live by them.
Remember the Bible account of the Red Sea parting? Even if the Cecil B. DeMille version isn't already lodged in your mind, it's an incident easy to picture: There are the children of Israel following Moses, their inspired spiritual leader. The Red Sea is on one side. On the other, and coming up fast , are those very hostile enemies. Boxed in indeed. But Moses turns to God and, the sea parts for the Israelites to cross to safety. The Bible narrative concludes, "The Lord saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians." n1

It's easy to spot seas or armies as potential blockades. And modern day counterparts such as massive unemployment or severe housing shortages can loom just as imposingly.But the "inner" limitations of fear, resentment, lack of ability, can also be restrictive. In a way, they are the brick and mortar of those more visible walls. Our need is to grasp the spiritual truths that knock down such walls.
Mary Baker Eddy, n2 in her writings, lays out marvelous spiritual fundamentals. Fundamentals that can be applied to getting out of the box of mortal existence. In her main work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,m she writes, "God expresses in man the infinite idea forever developing itself, broadening and rising higher and higher from a boundless basis." She adds further on, "The human capacities are enlarged and perfected in proportion as humanity gains the true conception of man and God." n3

As we understand the divine infinite more and more, we'll be less dependent on -- and less boxed in by -- the finite. That view of man as cramped by limitations, whether comical at the circus or pathetic or tragic in daily life -- from the spiritual point of view understood and proved by Christ Jesus is illusory.
