An attempted palace coup by rightist military officers against young and moderate officers triggered a virtual state of alert in El Salvador Tuesday among troops loyal to both sides. Western diplomatic sources called the situation in the Central American nation, where nearly 5,000 people have been killed in political violence this year, "a crisis within the military," but said they doubted it would escalate into open civil warfare.
