The Philadelphia Flyers went 2-0-1 to extend their NHL-record unbeaten string to 32 games, a streak which finds them cruising 19 points in front of their nearest Patrick Division rivals, the New York Rangers, with a league-best 24-1- 10 mark. The only team close to Philly's 58 points is Buffalo, which split a pair of games and remains comfortably in front of Boston in the Adams Division. Montreal (42 points) and Chicago (36) lead the other division races.

Mike Bossy's hat trick carried the New York Islanders to a 7-3 victory over the Canadiens, overshadowing a personal milestone by Montreal's Guy Lafleur, who become, at 28, the youngest NHL player to reach 1,000 career points with his 28 th goal of the season.

Left winger Charlie Simmer of the Los Angeles Kings had his modern-record goal-scoring streak snapped at 13 by Minnesota, which only allowed him one shot in a 4-3 loss.

Toronto's attempts to instill new life the lineup were met with protests, first by the fans, who picketed Maple Leaf Gardens after Lanny McDonald was traded to Colorado, and then by Darryl Sittler, who quit his post of captain after leading the club for more than five seasons. Toronto, next-to-last in the Adams race, is 16-16-4.
