Security Council sets Jan. 7 as deadline for freeing hostages

The Security Council imposed a Jan. 7 deadline Monday for release of American hostages in Tehran and decided to meet again then to adopt sanctions if Iran failed to comply.

The vote was 11 to 0, with 4 abstentions.
