WORTH NOTING ON TV

* SUNDAY

Super Bowl XXIX (ABC, 6 p.m., EST, to conclusion): This edition of the postseason pro-football classic - the 29th, broadcast from Miami's Joe Robbie Stadium - should prove no exception to the game's annual ranking as the most-watched program on TV. Viewer estimates range up to 135 million or so in the United States.

The high rating is probable despite the fact that the game's outcome is viewed as more predictable than in any previous Bowl game: The four-time Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers are very heavily favored to beat the San Diego Chargers - newcomers to the Bowl. Just last month the 49ers beat them 38-15.

Frank Gifford, Al Michaels, and Dan Dierdorf call the plays. They are among 200 or more people involved in ABC's coverage. We're talking some 25 cameras, 50 microphones, 20 videotape machines, 32 vehicles, 75 TV monitors, 20 miles of cable, and lots of other equipment.

Just the half-time show - ``Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye'' - involves some 1,000 people, including performances by Tony Bennett and Patti LaBelle.

And then there are the commercials.... * MONDAY

The American Music Awards (ABC, 8 p.m., EST, to conclusion): Very hot artists, like leading contender Boyz II Men, come with this highly visible awards show. Among the events this year, Madonna and Babyface will offer ``Take a Bow,'' the first live performance of Madonna's current Top-10 hit. Black Men United, a group boasting a roster of chart-topping artists, makes its first live TV appearance. The show's hosts are singing star Tom Jones, country's Lorrie Morgan, and rapper and actress Queen Latifah.

The awards - 22 in all - are decided by a poll of record buyers in the US. In pop-rock, country, and soul/rhythm and blues, for instance, categories include male vocalist, female vocalist, duo or group, single record, album, and new artist.

This year's Award of Merit goes to Prince (yes, Prince).
