WHAT'S TABOO ON ANIMAL-RIGHTS AGENDA

The most extreme animal-rights organizations - among them PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, Washington, D.C.), and CEASE (Citizens to End Animal Suffering and Exploitation, Cambridge, Mass.) - support these measures: No wearing animal skins, and accessories: fur, leather, suede, sheepskin.

No use of animal by-products: wool, silk, down, animal oils (mink, cod liver), cashmere.

No eating animal products: meat, fish, chicken, eggs, milk, cheese, honey; shunning edible animal by-products such as gelatin, bullion, fats.

No using animal by-products: collagen (found in face creams), tallow (in soaps), bone meal, marrow (found in pet food).

No testing on animals: medical, cosmetic.

No using animals as surrogates: Reevaluate our relationship with domestic animals. Ultimately pets - dogs, cats, birds - will be out of the picture. No zoos; no aquariums; no seeing-eye dogs; and no trained chimpanzees.
