Home run with tarred bat ruled OK

American League president Lee MacPhail overruled his umpires and upheld a protest by the Kansas City Royals by declaring that George Brett's two-run homer Sunday was valid. Umpires had disallowed Brett's home run because the coating of pine tar was too far up his bat. Mr. MacPhail's decision threw out a 4-to-3 New York Yankee victory. The game may be finished later this season, if scheduling permits.
