African nations seek aid to withstand South Africa

Leaders of nine black African nations appealed for international help to combat what they called an undeclared war against them by South Africa. They also urged friendly Western nations to transfer investment from the white-minority-ruled republic to the economies of its neighbors and to back their efforts to develop peacefully. Leaders met here for their summit of the Southern African Development Coordination Conference.
