"Japan Unescorted,'' a guidebook put out by Japan Air Lines, contains general descriptions of 10 major Japanese cities and their surroundings, including Tokyo , Kyoto, Himeji, Kurashiki, Nagoya, Takayama, Kanazawa, Sendai, Nagasaki, and Sapporo. Each section includes listings of business hotels, Japanese inns, restaurants, and shops where the foreign visitor can find good value for his money.

Introductory passages point out the language barrier and general lack of Japanese experience with foreigners, then offers suggestions on how to cope with the situation. Explanations are given on how to enjoy Japan's inexpensive business hotels and minshuku, or family inns. There are suggestions on how to meet Japanese, use the country's extensive domestic transportation network, when to travel, and what to pack.
