Pope's Spanish trip ends; three charged with plot

This northwestern pilgrimage town was the last stop on Pope John Paul II's 10 -day tour of Spain. He was due to return to Rome directly from Santiago Tuesday.

In Madrid, it was reported that French police arrested three Basque terrorists for planning to kill the Pope last week only hours before he traveled to the violent Basque region. The attack allegedly was planned for the Pope's stop at Loyola, a mountaintop Jesuit sanctuary in the heart of Basque country. The three were arrested in southern France, where Basque hit squads traditionally hide out between actions.
