New Salvadoran leader may give rebels amnesty

The new provisional President of El Salvador, Alvaro Magana, said he may declare amnesty for leftist guerrillas willing to give up their fight against government troops. He also vowed his administration will respect human rights.

Meanwhile, the guerrillas' clandestine Radio Venceremos said an American fighting alongside rebels in El Salvador was killed during a government offensive near the Honduran border. Joseph David Anderson, who had been working as ''a journalist and writer'' while aiding the rebels, was killed April 27, it said. There was no immediate comment from the US Embassy in San Salvador.
