Pursuit of Khmer rebels brings Thai border clashes

About 300 Vietnamese-ledtroops moved into Thailand from Kampuchea in pursuit of Khmer Rouge guerrillas and withdrew after clashes with Thai forces, military officials said.

The intruders, including 40 Vietnamese, had penetrated half a mile inside Thailand at Saptali, 190 miles southeast of Bangkok, when they clashed briefly with a Thai border police unit, sources said. After the fighting, the sources said, five Thai police officers were missing.
