The best of the outdoors is combined with the finest of mountain living at a small resort in the upper Adirondacks of New York State. Located on a peninsula on Upper Saranac Lake, The Point is a backwoods-luxurious resort of only eight master bedrooms that was once the mountain retreat camp of William Avery Rockefeller. Its current owner, Edward G. L. Carter, opened The Point to guests less than two years ago.
Carter has developed a series of cross-country ski tours for all levels of ability with tours ranging from a simple circuit around two islands on the lake, along several beautiful trails that meander through a forest preserve, to a demanding ten-mile trip to challenge the expert.
For those who like to mix their cross country with downhill skiing, The Point is located near the Big Tupper Ski Area.
Stays at The Point include luxury accommodations in large wood-paneled bedrooms with fireplaces overlooking the Upper Saranac and all refreshments and meals, at $100 per person per day, based on double occupancy.

Travelers to Britain this winter can take advantage of current rates for BritRail Passes. BritRail is holding the price line by extending 1981 rates through March, 1982. A BritRail Pass is valid for unlimited transportation on comfortable, modern trains throughout England, Scotland, and Wales. Prices start at $99 for 7 days economy class and $140 first class. For a 14-day pass the rate is $150 economy class, $210 first class; a 21-day pass is $190 economy class, $ 260 first class; and a one-month pass is $225 economy class, $299 first class.
The pass must be purchased in the US, and are available from travel agents, or BritRail Travel International, 630 Third Avenue, New York, NY 10017, or BritRail regional offices in Chicago, Los Angeles, Vancouver, and Toronto.
Last December a fire destroyed the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont. But at a celebration on September 26, the cornerstone for the new lodge was dedicated, and it is scheduled for completion in June 1982. The new lodge will be built a little further back into the slope, and will be larger, with 54 rooms. It will have a gabled roof line, a bell tower, and window boxes for flowers. In addition, a concert hall seating 300 people, tennis courts, and an indoor swimming pool will offer guests a variety of activities to choose from.
The Trapp family also unveiled their newest addition, Vacation Time-sharing guest houses. Each two bedroom guest house is stylishly furnished and includes sleeping for six and two bathrooms. The kitchen is stocked with china, glassware , utensils and appliances. The living room has a corner fireplace and bay windows overlooking the Trapp meadows and the Green Mountains.
