European ports to be able to police safety on ships

Port authorities in several West European countries will be empowered to enforce safety standards aboard potentially dangerous ships as of next November, the International Labor Organization said.

The convention will enable port authorities to check conditions on board, even if the ship belongs to a country that has not ratified the convention. It will empower authorities to rectify on the spot conditions clearly hazardous to safety and health.
