'Elephant Man' and 'Bull' lead Oscar nominations

Two visually brutal movies based on fact -- "The Elephant Man" and "Raging Bull" -- led all motion pictures for the 53rd annual Academy Awards with eight nominations each, including nominations for best actor, John Hurt and Robert De Niro.

Also nominated for best picture were "Coal Miner's Daughter," with seven nominations, and "Ordinary People" and "Tess," with six each.

Nominated for best actress were Ellen Burstyn, "resurrection"; Goldie Hawn, "Private Benjamin"; Mary Tyler Moore, "Ordinary People"; Gena Rowlands, "Gloria"; and Sissy Spacek, "Coal Miner's Daughter."

Nominated for best actor were Robert Duvall, "The Great Santini"; Jack Lemmo n, "Tribute"; and Peter O'Toole, "The Stunt Man."
