Iran's parliament in hands of fundamentalist victors

The Islamic Republican Party, which favors spy trials for the American hostages, won the majority of the seats in the 360-member Majlis (parliament), election results showed Monday. The body has been entrusted by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini with deciding the fate of the captives. The parliament's first meeting is scheduled for June 5.

President Abolhassan Bani-Sadr's more moderate group emerged as the second most distinct force in the balloting. While results aren't expected until midweek, as of late sunday 132 seats of the estimated 270 at stake in the second and final round of parliamentary voting were decided.
