Mid-South states plow out from 30 inches of snow

National Guard troops plowed into North Carolina and Virginia Monday to help out citizens stranded in a record storm that dumped up to 30 inches of snow. The weekend onslaught was blamed for at least 24 deaths in the eastern half of the nation.

Arctic air penetrated much of the country, and 41 cities reported record- low temperatures for Monday. Hardest hit were Elkins, W.Va., where the minus-14 F. reading eclipsed the previous low of zero set back in 1925, and Cincinnati, which was stung by an 11- below reading.
