Sabra hummus recall includes 30,000 cases that may contain listeria

Sabra Dipping Co. will recall 30,000 cases of its Classic Hummus due to possible listeria contamination. The Sabra hummus recall affects products sold in retail outlets and supermarkets nationwide.

April 9, 2015

Sabra, one of the biggest names in Hummus, is recalling 30,000 cases of its most recognizable product after a routine inspection found risk of possible contamination with listeria, a food-borne bacteria commonly found in fruits, vegetables, and certain prepackaged foods.

The recall includes certain cases of Sabra's Classic Hummus with "Best before" dates of either May 11, 2015, or May 15, 2015. No other Sabra products were affected, and no illnesses have been reported in relation to the recall.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the recall was issued after a routine inspection of the White Plains, N.Y.-based company's products at a Kroger supermarket in Port Huron, Mich. by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development on March 30. The inspection turned up samples that tested positive for listeria. Medical professionals say the bacteria can cause serious infections in the elderly, young children, and those with weakened immune systems.

Listeria has been a culprit in several major food recalls in the US in recent years. Last month, Amy's Kitchen, a popular organic prepared foods company, recalled thousands of its products containing spinach at risk for listeria contamination. In a separate recall issued the same day, supermarket chain Wegman's pulled thousands of containers of frozen spinach off its shelves, also due to possible listeria contamination.

In December, listeria in prepackaged caramel apples was linked to 28 illnesses and four deaths in 10 states. On Wendesday, Blue Bell Creameries expanded a previous recall of banana pudding ice cream made in an Oklahoma plant for listeria contamination. That recall has been linked to three deaths in Kansas, and the company has suspended operations at its Oklahoma facility.

Consumers who have bought products affected by the Sabra recall should throw them out or return them to the store for a full refund. Consumers with any questions may call Sabra toll free at 888-957-2272, Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. central time, or visit the recall notice on the Food and Drug Administration's website here.
