PGA Championship 2015 TV schedule: Who to watch Friday

Some familiar and not-so-familiar names are at or near the top of the leader board after Thursday's first round.

Despite not having won a major championship while coming close on several occasions, Dustin Johnson plays well enough in the early rounds to put himself in contention.

He did it at both the US and British Opens this year and he's done it once again after the first round of the 97th annual PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

Johnson shot a six under par 66 Thursday to earn a one-shot lead over David Lingmerth of Sweden. Johnson is playing with Jason Day of Australia, who's two shots off the lead at four under par, and Rickie Fowler, who's at one over par. That threesome will tee off their second round at 2:20 p.m. Eastern time Friday.

The first round leader talked about his play on Thursday.

"Today I thought I did a great job of just staying patient, hitting the shots that the course allowed me to hit. And I struck the ball well today. So I was very pleased," Johnson told reporters afterwards.

Lingmerth is paired with Kevin Streelman of the US and South Korea's Sangmoon Bae. They will start their second round at 8:55 a.m. Eastern.

There's an eight-way tie for third place at four under after the PGA's first round. Along with Day, American Matt Kuchar is in the hunt. He'll be playing with Victor Dubuisson of France and former Masters champion Charl Schwartzel of South Africa, teeing off at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Four golfers are tied at three under par, including Britain's Justin Rose. The former US Open champ tees off at 1:50 p.m. Eastern, along with Australian Geoff Ogilvy, another former US Open champion, and American Brandt Snedeker, who's at one under par.

There are nine golfers who shot a two under par 70, including 2010 PGA champ Martin Kaymer of Germany and 2009 PGA winner Y.E. Yang of South Korea.

Kaymer is playing alongside Tiger Woods, who shot a three over par 75 Thursday. Those two, along with Keegan Bradley, will tee off at 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Yang is paired with two former PGA champions, Shaun Micheel from 2003 and 2002 winner Rich Beem. That threesome will get started at 8:15 a.m.

Defending champion Rory McIlroy, back in action after missing the British Open with a leg injury, shot a one under par 71 Thursday, as did Masters and US Open champion Jordan Spieth. They're paired together with British Open winner Zach Johnson, who shot a three over 75 in the first round, and will tee off at 9:05 a.m. Eastern on Friday.
