Have mercy! Netflix is bringing back 'Full House'

The rumors are true; Netflix has announced a 13-episode reboot of the classic sitcom 'Full House,' which will be called 'Fuller House' this time around.

Appearing on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Monday night, actor John Stamos, who played Jesse Katsopolis in the 80s and 90s sitcom “Full House,” announced that Netflix will be picking up where ABC Family left off 20 years ago with a 13-episode reboot.

The show’s creator, Jeff Franklin, will serve as the executive producer of the ninth season, and Mr. Stamos will be returning to produce and make occasional guest appearances.

The reboot will star “Full House” veterans Candace Cameron-Bure (D.J. Tanner), Jodie Sweetin (Stephanie Tanner), and Andrea Barber (Kimmy Gibbler ). Additionally, Netflix is in talks with other “Full House” stars, including Bob Saget, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Dave Coulier, and Lori Loughlin, to guest star as well.

The new season will be titled “Fuller House” and will follow the adventures of Bure’s character D.J. Tanner Fuller – hence the name of the show – who is now a widowed and pregnant veterinarian. Mirroring the premise of the original show, D.J.’s younger sister Stephanie and childhood best friend Kimmy move in to help her raise her two sons and newborn baby.

“As big fans of the original 'Full House,' we are thrilled to be able to introduce 'Fuller House’s' new narrative to existing fans worldwide, who grew up on the original, as well as a new generation of global viewers that have grown up with the Tanners in syndication,” Cindy Holland, vice president of original content for Netflix, said in a statement.

News of the rumored reboot first broke earlier this month, but according to Stamos, the show’s original producers have been trying to organize a revival for years.

“The original creator, Jeff Franklin, and [executive producers] Bob Boyett and Tom Miller — we were trying to do some sort of spin-off and, you know, we wanted to give credit to the legacy. We didn’t want to, sort of, just throw it away,” Stamos told Jimmy Kimmel. “We’ve been literally trying for so many years to do it right, and I think we’ve finally got it perfect.”

According to Stamos, the ninth season will debut on Netflix in 2016 with a one-hour special.

Miller and Jeff Franklin said in a joint statement. “It is an honor and a thrill to catch up with these beloved characters and explore their lives today. The love you saw on the show was real. The cast has remained a loving family off screen all these years. We are as excited as our fans to finally bring ‘Full House’ back to life.”
