'Room' actress Brie Larson wins the Best Actress Oscar

Larson starred in the movie as a young woman being held captive with her son (Jacob Tremblay). 'When I met Brie, not only did you have an amazing actor, but you’ve also got this really warm, really funny, really vibrant person,' her director, Lenny Abrahamson, said of casting Larson.

Brie Larson has won the Oscar for Best Actress for her work in the film “Room.”

Larson stars in “Room” as a young woman who was kidnapped and is now forced to live in a shed with her son.

Larson has also recently appeared in such movies as “Trainwreck” as well as on the TV show “Community.”

After thanking the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences during her acceptance speech, Larson said, "I want to start big, because the thing that I love about moviemaking is how many people it takes to make it."

Monitor film critic Peter Rainer called the actress “extraordinarily good” in her role in “Room,” also singling out the performance of Larson’s co-star Jacob Tremblay, who portrays her son. “With great delicacy, director Lenny Abrahamson brings us very deep inside the boy’s wide-eyed bafflements,” Rainer wrote of the film.

“Room” is adapted from the novel of the same name by Emma Donoghue.

Larson told the Telegraph that she enjoyed the source material. “I absolutely loved it and devoured it in a day,” she said.

As one might expect with the subject matter, the actress said the movie shoot was grueling at times.

A majority of Americans no longer trust the Supreme Court. Can it rebuild?

“It was exhausting for the crew to shoot in so confined a space, and you could really feel the momentum in the room, of us all desperately wanting to get out,” Larson said of the process. “That sense of confinement was real.”

“Room” director Lenny Abrahamson told the website ComingSoon.net that he felt he needed to find someone who would be close to the actor playing her son.

“When I met Brie, not only did you have an amazing actor, but you’ve also got this really warm, really funny, really vibrant person,” Abrahamson said. “They’ve got to be silly together and they’ve got to play. People can’t fake it with kids…. Brie isn’t and Jake knew that.”

In an interview with Variety, Tremblay himself said of his acquaintance with Larson, “I met her in a pizza place when we started filming the movie in Toronto. She was really, really awesome. I was first shy when I met her. But my mom said, ‘How about she comes over to play?’ So then she came over, and we’re best friends now.”
