Miley Cyrus: What does she bring to 'The Voice'?

Cyrus, who will join 'Voice' as a judge next season, advised contestants on the March 28 episode of the NBC program. Some critics praised the guidance she gave those who were competing. 

Singer Miley Cyrus appeared as an advisor on the most recent episode of the NBC singing competition “The Voice” following the announcement that Ms. Cyrus will be joining the program as a judge next fall.

Cyrus appeared on the March 28 episode of the show as an advisor to the contestants. The newest episode of “Voice” featured the “knockout rounds,” in which two singers compete to be selected by the judges to proceed in the competition. 

The current season premiered in late February. The judges for this season, the show's 10th, are country singer Blake Shelton, Adam Levine of Maroon 5, singer Christina Aguilera, and Pharrell Williams of “Happy.”

Cyrus and singer Alicia Keys will be joining the judging panel next season, teaming up with Mr. Shelton and Mr. Levine. 

How will Cyrus perform as a judge?

Los Angeles Times writer Amy Reiter wrote approvingly of the “Wrecking Ball” singer’s appearance on the most recent “Voice” episode. “Seems like it’s going to be good,” Ms. Reiter wrote of Cyrus’s time as a judge. “And it’s going to be fun. And it appears as if Cyrus’ guidance will be truly useful to the contestants.… The advice Cyrus dispensed was specific and helpful and really seemed to have a positive effect on the contestants’ performances. And the fact that she appeared to be enjoying herself was cool, too.”

TVLine writer Michael Slezak agreed, writing that Cyrus “offered more specific, actionable, insightful advice over the course of the episode than Adam, Pharrell, Blake and [Christina] combined.” 

Emily Yahr of The Washington Post is also excited to see what Cyrus and Ms. Keys will bring to the program.

“This casting could mean great things for the show,” Ms. Yahr wrote, noting that two female judges have never served at the same time on the show.

“The Voice” has done well with young viewers in the past, though Yahr notes that that viewership for the show has dropped slightly. Adding Cyrus could bring in that demographic. “If her MTV VMAs appearances are any indication, Cyrus – the youngest judge in ‘Voice’ history – loves to go rogue and pull stunts on camera," Yahr wrote. "‘The Voice’ switches over to live shows about halfway through the season, so that's quite the added incentive for viewers to tune in to see whatever crazy thing she might do or say.... Cyrus boasts a fiercely loyal – and extremely young – audience.”
