“Star Trek” actor Chris Pine has reportedly been cast in the upcoming “Wonder Woman” film.

According to reports, Pine has been cast in the role of Steve Trevor. In the classic Wonder Woman story, Wonder Woman is an Amazon princess and Steve, a military pilot, becomes stranded on Wonder Woman’s home island. Diana, also known as Wonder Woman, falls in love with him and returns with him to America.

Wonder Woman’s alter ego is Diana Prince and much like Superman’s love interest Lois Lane, Steve was often unable to recognize Diana Prince as the Wonder Woman he admired.

Actress Gal Gadot is starring as Wonder Woman in the DC movie universe and will appear in the 2016 film “Batman v Superman.” The Wonder Woman movie is being directed by Patty Jenkins of “Monster” and is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2017.

Pine currently portrays "Star Trek" character James Tiberius Kirk in the "Star Trek" movie series, a part originally taken on by William Shatner, and starred in the 2014 movie musical "Into the Woods."

Fans have been calling for a female-led superhero film for some time now. Black Widow, who is portrayed by Scarlett Johansson, is part of the Avengers superhero team in the Marvel films and also starred in 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” but so far she hasn’t been at the center of a film. In the “X-Men” franchise, which is released by 20th Century Fox and centers on Marvel characters, actress Jennifer Lawrence has played central character Mystique for two films and another is coming in the summer of 2016, but she hasn’t had her own movie, either.

However, Marvel revealed last year that a movie centering on the character of Captain Marvel is in the works and that the version of the character presented in the movie will be that of Carol Danvers, who is an officer in the Air Force in the comics and is gifted with superstrength and the ability to fly, among other powers.

Meanwhile, a female superhero is heading up her own story on the small screen – the CBS show “Supergirl,” starring Melissa Benoist as the relative of Superman, is coming this fall.
