Will Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass return for a new 'Bourne' movie?

Greengrass directed Damon in two of the most critically acclaimed installments in the 'Bourne' series and a movie without Damon and Greengrass, 'The Bourne Legacy,' was released in 2012. Now the actor and director are reportedly in talks with Universal Pictures to make a new film.

Will actor Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass return to the “Bourne” movie franchise?

Universal “has begun making deals” with the two to make a new film, according to Deadline.

Damon starred in three “Bourne” films, which are based on the books of the same name by author Robert Ludlum. Greengrass directed the second installment, “The Bourne Supremacy,” and the third, “The Bourne Ultimatum.” Both were the most critically acclaimed of the series, with “Supremacy” holding a score of 73/100 on review aggregator website Metacritic and “Ultimatum” earning an 85/100 (the first movie, “The Bourne Identity,” was directed by Doug Liman and holds a score of 68/100). “Ultimatum” was also the highest-grossing film of the series. “The Avengers” actor Jeremy Renner starred in the fourth “Bourne” film, 2012’s “The Bourne Legacy,” as another agent, but the movie didn't gross as much as "Ultimatum," according to the website Box Office Mojo, with "Legacy" taking in more than $113 million domestically compared to the "Ultimatum" domestic gross of more than $227 million.

After “Legacy” was released, Damon told the website Movieline, “I’d really love to do another one because I love the character, [but it's] a real struggle to extend the franchise… [Bourne's search to] find his identity [is done, so] where do you go next?”

Neither Universal Pictures nor representatives for Damon and Greengrass would comment on the possible new plan, according to Deadline.

Universal Pictures is also working on a movie set in the same universe that would bring back Renner, according to Deadline, with Justin Lin of “Fast & Furious 6” set to direct, but this new film could take the movie release date in July 2016 that was previously set aside for the film with Renner.

In his review of “Ultimatum,” Monitor film critic Peter Rainer praised Damon’s performance as the title character.

“Bourne is likely to remain his signature part for some time to come,” he wrote of the actor. “Within its highly circumscribed limits the part fits him like a glove.”
