In 2005, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt co-starred in Mr. and Mrs. Smith, an action/comedy about a husband and wife whose dull marriage gets injected with fresh life when they each discover the other is a secret assassin working for a competing agency. The rest, as they say, is history; Jolie and Pitt’s onscreen chemistry helped make the film a success, before they got together in real life and have since become one of the most famous celebrity power-duos currently active in the biz. “Brangelina” is now set to share the screen for only the second time. Unlike Pitt and Jolie’s first co-starring effort – the 2005 action/comedy Mr. & Mrs. Smith - Universal’s By the Sea will be a character-driven drama, and is set to be directed by Jolie herself.

In addition to directing, Jolie will also write, produce and co-star in By the Sea, with Pitt also producing. Outside of the fact that it will be a low-key, intimate drama about a couple’s relationship, very little is known about By the Sea’s plot. That said, the fact that the film stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt will likely be enough to convince many people to make the journey out to their local theater.

By the Sea will mark Jolie’s third directorial effort, her first being the 2011 drama In the Land of Blood and Honey, which was set during the Bosnian War. Unbroken, Jolie’s second venture behind the camera, is still in post-production. It serves as a biopic of Olympic runner turned Air Force bombardier Louis Zamperini, who was taken prisoner by the Japanese during World War II.

One notable change going into By the Sea is that the film will mark Jolie’s first ever self-directed performance, which is always a risky endeavor. Starring in a film can be an incredibly time-consuming, mentally-draining process; directing a film is arguably even more stressful. Doing both jobs well at the same time is a feat that has certainly been accomplished quite a few times, but it’s also something that has gone horribly wrong just as often.

By the Sea has no current release date.
