Words With Friends, the most downloaded free game ever in the Apple's App Store, has returned with a new version. The popular word game has rolled in new features, such as offline play, community matching, and player profiles.

Words With Friends was launched in 2009 by Zynga, a San Francisco-based game developer who created popular games like FarmVille and Clumsy Ninja. Since its launch, Words With Friends has been extremely popular. A total of 58 billion words have been played in the 7.7 billion games. Some 55 million matches are being played at any one time, according to the company.

One of the new features is offline play. Users can play without an Internet connect and without a direct opponent.

An additional upgrade is community match. Using a swipe system, players can look through player profiles, a new feature that shows a user's playing history, and find potential opponents. Swipe one way to play that opponent and swipe another way to chose another one.

Players can also sign up for a word of the day feature to build up their vocabulary for future games.

"We're proud to deliver a vastly enhanced playing experience with New Words With Friends that offers the same entertaining word game players have loved for the past five years with an abundance of new features that players have asked for," Jonathan Knight, vice president of games at Zynga, said in an e-mailed statement. "Five years is an incredible achievement for the game and we want to thank all of our loyal Words With Friends players who are the reason we've reached this meaningful milestone."

The new version of Words With Friends is available in the App Store, Google Play, Facebook, Amazon, and the Windows Store.
