When to Shop

Sales Start Way Before Black Friday

It's true: Black Friday sales seem to start earlier and earlier every year. During the 2015 season, Black Friday sales actually kicked off an entire week before the holiday. It's likely that many stores will have discounts early on.

However, the sales and deals will continue to get better as Black Friday week progresses. And the sales won't stop there; clothing deals tend to spike again on Cyber Monday. We recommend paying close attention to your favorite clothing retailers the week of Black Friday, and again on Cyber Monday for any new promotions that debuted for Cyber Week.

What to Buy

At Least 50% Off Outerwear

Outerwear deals were incredibly popular last year. In 2016, keep an eye out at Lands' End for deals that take at least 50% off items for the whole family. This discount could come on top of items already discounted by up to 40%. Columbia will also likely boast 50% off outerwear, and a $30 gift card on certain orders will definitely sweeten the deal.

Designer Duds Get Dollar-Off Discounts

Be on the lookout for high dollar-off deals — like $60 off $100 or more — coupled with free shipping. We saw this deal at Bon-Ton last year, and it included high-end brands like Kenneth Cole, Calvin Klein, Cole Haan, Ralph Lauren, and Tommy Hilfiger.

Cozy Up to Sub-$10 Sweaters

The best sweater deals will be at stores like Target, and include discounts of at least 40% off, with prices from $6 to $8 on store brands like Mossimo and Merona. Even better, many of them should be able to be combined with no-minimum free shipping offers. Look to stores like Gap and The Limited for women's sweaters priced around $8 to $10, coupled with low- or no-minimum free shipping codes.

Find affordable deals on men's sweaters at stores like Macy's. Last year, these deals started around $18 and included brands like American Rag, Izod, and Tricots St. Raphael. However, be aware the free shipping minimum might be slightly higher (last year, it was $50).

Significant Savings on Shirts

Athletic pieces from top brands like Nike could drop as low as $12, and qualify for free shipping. Popular, general-purpose clothing stores like Gap should have button-ups for as little as $7, with a very low shipping cost (around $5).

Quality dress shirts are practically a sure bet, so look for deals that include two or more for an all-time low, like two store brand shirts for $49 at Jos. A. Bank, plus free shipping. Also expect to find high-end picks like Polo Ralph Lauren men's knit shirts at stores like Macy's for as little as $30 with in-store pickup.

Jaw-Dropping Watch Discounts

Watches are likely to be the accessory with the most sales. Look for the best discounts at sites like Kohl's. Last year, we saw 75% off brands like Croton and Stuhrling, plus stacking coupons that provided an extra 15% off and Kohl's Cash rewards. It's even better if you can nab one with a free shipping offer.

Watches are likely to be the accessory with the most sales.

Look to stores like Ashford for straight discounts, like 90% off on brands including Davidoff, Movado, Calvin Klein, Harry Winston, Bulgari, and Coach. Stores like Amazon will be more likely to offer savings on brands like Timex, usually around 50% off via a code.

Where to Shop

Clothing Stores Have the Best Clothing Deals (Obviously)

Mid-tier to high-end clothing stores are most likely to offer their best sales of the year during this time. Guess, Lucky Brand, Old Navy, Kenneth Cole, and White House | Black Market all had their best general sales of the year around Black Friday last year.

Be sure to check retailers like Ralph Lauren for significant discounts combined with rare no-minimum shipping offers. Some stores, like Urban Outfitters, offered unremarkable percentages off last year, but with better starting prices.
