General Motors recalls 89,000 more vehicles. Which vehicles are affected?

General Motors announced four more recalls last week, affecting about 89,000 GM vehicles. Here is a breakdown of which GM vehicle models are affected, and how many were recalled. 

Late last week, we published a roundup of General Motors' recalls for 2014. The next day, GM announced four more, affecting an array of Buick, Chevrolet, and GMC models from the past few years. 

All told, these new recalls affect some 89,000 vehicles. Here are quick recaps of all four, in order of size:

Recall #1: 2014 Chevrolet Silverado LD; 2014 GMC Sierra LD; 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD, Tahoe, Suburban; 2015 GMC Sierra HD, Yukon, Yukon XL 

The base radio on these eight models may suffer from a software glitch. The base radio conveys audible warnings in a range of situations -- for example, when a passenger hasn't buckled up, or if the driver leaves the key in the ignition when opening the door. As a result, occupants could be less protected in the event of a crash, or the car itself could be more vulnerable to rollaway or theft. However, GM says that it knows of no collisions or injuries caused by this problem.

This recall affects 57,512 vehicles. The fix will involve a software upgrade, which will be provided free of charge by GM dealerships.

Recall #2: 2012 Buick Verano; 2012 Chevrolet Camaro, Cruze, Sonic 

This recall stems from a problem with the airbag system. According to GM, "the shorting bar inside the dual stage driver’s air bag may occasionally contact the air bag terminals. If contact occurs, the air bag warning light will illuminate. If the car and terminals are contacting each other in a crash, the air bag will not deploy."

Oddly enough, GM says that it recalled 7,116 of these vehicles not once, but twice for this very same problem. At the time, no crashes had been definitively linked to the flaw.

More recently, however, GM has found one crash (with injury) that can be blamed on the wiring issue. The company knows of other crashes in which airbags didn't deploy, but it hasn't yet determined whether they're related to this particular problem. 

This recall affects 31,520 GM vehicles. GM says that dealers will switch out the steering wheel air bag coil, eliminating any possibility that the shorting bar and the airbag terminals will touch one another. The repair will be carried out free of charge. 

Recall #3: 2013-2014 Chevrolet Spark; 2013 Buick Encore

This is a small recall, involving just 61 vehicles built in Changwon, Korea between December 30, 2012 and May 8, 2013. GM says that in these vehicles, the end cap on the front passenger airbag could detach from the airbag inflator, which would prevent the airbag from deploying during a crash. GM doesn't specify a fix for the problem, but says that it knows of no crashes or injuries related to it.

Recall #4: 2014 Chevrolet Corvette

This is the smallest of the four recalls, affecting a mere 33 cars. Once again, GM says the problem is related to the airbags and other safety systems: "an internal short-circuit in the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) could disable frontal air bags, safety belt pretensioners and the Automatic Occupancy Sensing module".

GM says that it knows of no crashes or injuries associated with the problem and that dealers will replace the Corvette's SDM free of charge.

GM hasn't given a precise timetable for these four recalls, but it submitted the necessary paperwork to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last Thursday. Once that paperwork is approved, GM will send owners a letter to explain the problem and indicate when vehicles can be taken to dealers for repairs.
