White iPhone 4 on the way. No, really. (Probably.)

White iPhone holdouts, rejoice. Apple's favorite tech unicorn is back. (Maybe.)

A white iPhone 4 is held aloft by Apple chief Steve Jobs during a keynote address in 2010. After that, the white iPhone more or less disappeared.

Oh, hey, remember that white Apple iPhone 4? Back when the iPhone 4 first launched, in the summer of 2010, Apple promised a white handset was on the way. And then there was a long delay, followed by a press statement: The white iPhone 4, Apple reps said, had proved "more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected." Cue months of silence. (And in the midst of those months of silence, Apple reveals the Verizon iPhone 4 – in white. But then that white model never materializes either!)

Now comes news that the white iPhone 4 is actually coming, and coming soon. According to Reuters, which quotes sources "familiar with the situation," Foxconn Technology Group is at work on a white iPhone handset. Launch date: A month away, give or take. Meanwhile, Bloomberg has filed a similar report – also quoting a couple of insiders – putting the white iPhone release date in the next few weeks.

"Adding a white model may help spur demand as Apple works on the next generation of its top-selling product. Apple, the world’s largest technology company by market value, isn’t planning to unveil a new iPhone at its June developers’ conference, breaking with its practice in past years, two people familiar with the matter said." Instead, analyst Mike Abramsky tells Bloomberg, the next iPhone will probably land in September. More here.

The most recent white iPhone 4 news came back in February, when a couple of tech blogs published photo evidence from two retail outlets. Before that, there was an Apple statement apologizing for the delay, and promising a release date of 2011. "We're sorry to disappoint customers waiting for the white iPhone again," Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller told Reuters at the time.
