The Bird Skinner by Alice Greenway is a fascinating novel of both sweet nature and horror, set during World War II in the Solomon Islands. I was fascinated as I was not yet 10 at the beginning of the war, nor was I privy to all the news. A "well known ornithologist" who would rather study wild life changed his own life to save the natives and the frightened soldiers. The reader will have a hard time putting this book down.
