The Age of Jackson by Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., was was a 1948 Pulitzer Prize winner. I found it to be more informative about the Federalists and the Whig Parties in the US than anything else that I have read. Schlesinger makes a good case for an economic determination of the Constitution of the US.
