The Covenant by James Michner is a very well written historical novel set in South Africa. Backgrounds are presented for the early nomadic peoples, the ancient city of Zimbabwe, the tribal and Boer wars, the vineyards, cape architecture, and the divisions caused by apartheid. Generations of English, Dutch, and black families are detailed through the history. With a cup of hot chocolate, this book makes for perfect rainy afternoon reading.
