I am re-reading The Unquiet American: Richard Holbrooke in the World, a biography of "the last of the Kennedy-inspired idealists." Holbrooke was a diplomat with a many faceted personality who proved that one person can make a difference. In the words of Henry Kissinger, "On  the big issues of the day, Richard saw a challenge not an obstacle.... he was above all ambitious to do, not to be."
