Connie Briscoe, author of A Long Way From Home, is a descendant of slaves at Montpelier plantation in Virginia, and her historical fiction gives a heart-rending picture of their lives from 1836 to the end of the Civil War. I found the book both fascinating and hard to read. It has made a lasting impression on me.
