The Netherlands is expected to shut down Slovakia, while Brazil is expected to have a difficult time against fellow South American power Chile during the World Cup schedule Monday.

Monday (June 28):

  • Netherlands vs. Slovakia, 10 am ET on ESPN
  • Brazil vs. Chile, 2:30 pm ET on ESPN

No. 4-ranked Netherlands is thus-far undefeated in the 2010 World Cup. No. 34-ranked Slovakia has won one, tied one, and lost one. Even if the Eastern Europeans are knocked out, they'll be happy with making it this far in their first-ever World Cup appearance since Czechoslovakia split in 1993.

This afternoon, No. 1-ranked Brazil faces No. 18-ranked Chile. No South American teams have been yet ousted from the 2010 World Cup.

Brazil has six members in ESPN's ranking of top 50 players worldwide. Chile has no players ranked in the top 50, and is another team where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

This past weekend saw the field thin, amid some really poor refereeing.

On Sunday, Germany crushed England (4-1), and Argentina roundly outran Mexico (3-1).

On Saturday, Uruguay beat South Korea (2-1), and Ghana held off a resurgent USA (2-1).
