College athletic directors always keep a list of coaches names handy, in case one of theirs decides to leave or they have to be fired.

University of Miami athletic director Kirby Hocutt finds himself in that position, after firing Randy Shannon, the Hurricanes head football coach, last weekend.

Media reports, quoting sources at the university, indicate Hocutt will meet with Jon Gruden – a former NFL head coach and current ESPN NFL Monday night analyst – on Wednesday to discuss the school's opening.

Other reports point to Gruden as Miami's top choice to replace Shannon, who was fired after the Hurricanes lost to South Florida at home on Saturday.

Gruden coached the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a victory over the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl 37, following the 2002 NFL season. He also coached the Raiders for four years before taking over the Bucs.

In September, rumors also circulated that Gruden was in the running for head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Instead, Jason Garrett was named the Cowboys' interim head coach when Wade Phillips was fired in November.
