BMW recall: What you need to know

BMW recalls almost 200,000 cars from the 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars over concerns that their power brake lines may develop a leak.

BMW of North America is recalling own brand and Rolls-Royce cars powered by V8 and V12 engines because of a potential braking problem. The BMW recall affects almost 350,000 cars worldwide.

BMW is voluntarily recalling certain BMW and Rolls-Royce models.

The recall affects 198,000 cars in North America, and will soon include another 150,000 cars worldwide, contrary to AP reports. "It will be a worldwide recall," said BMW spokesman Thomas Plucinsky, "but we handle each region separately."

The affected cars have V-8 or V-12 engines and come from the MW 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars models produced between 2002 and 2010 (all model numbers below). "It's our largest cars," said Mr. Plucinsky. They may develop a leak in the power braking system, which risks vacuum loss and consequent reduction of power braking.

Mechanical braking will still be available to slow and stop the vehicle, which may explain why there have been no reports of accidents or injuries.

Owners of affected cars are encouraged to contact an Authorized BMW Center to schedule inspection and possible repair. Drivers who have already experienced reduced power braking assistance should come in to their dealership immediately.

Affected BMW models include:
* 2002-08 BMW 745i/Li, 750i/Li, and 760i/Li
* 2007-08 BMW Alpina B7
* 2004-10 BMW 645i and 650i
* 2004-10 BMW 545i and 550i

Affected Rolls-Royce Motor Cars models include:
* 2003-2010 Rolls-Royce Phantom models
(does not include Rolls-Royce Ghost)
