Wesam al-Delaema, an Iraqi-born Dutch citizen, appeared in a federal court in Washington Monday to face terrorism conspiracy charges. The Justice Department says the trial is the first criminal prosecution of any individual involved in attacks targeting Americans in Iraq. The defendant, who was extradited from the Netherlands and flown to the US over the weekend, says he was forced by an insurgent group to make a videotape that shows how to prepare a roadside bomb.

Michigan authorities closed down a five-mile stretch of I-69, 50 miles north of Detroit, on Sunday when whiteout conditions led to a 24-vehicle pileup. There were numerous injuries but no fatalities.
