Fiction: "The Known World," by Edward Jones (Amistad).

Nonfiction: "Sons of Mississippi," by Paul Henderickson (Alfred A. Knopf).

Criticism: "River of Shadows," by Rebecca Solnit (Viking).

Poetry: "Columbarium," by Susan Stewart (University of Chicago).

Biography: "Khrushchev," by William Taubman (W.W. Norton).
