Gauguin's 'Nirvana': Painters at Le Pouldu, 1889-90

The small village of Le Pouldu on the western coast of France suited the reclusive nature of Paul Gauguin before he retired to Tahiti. A small coterie of painters joined Gauguin at Le Pouldu, and this one-time exhibition collects the best works of this period by the famous impressionist and fellow artists.

The Triumph of French Painting: Masterpieces from Ingres to Matisse

Through Mar. 11

Loans from two art galleries in Baltimore have yielded a rich exhibition of Gallic paintings from several periods between the 19th and 20th centuries. The impressionists are well represented by Monet, Renoir, and Cezanne, as are their artistic predecessors, Corot, Millet, Ingres, and Delacroix. Non-French painters Van Gogh and Picasso are also represented by works that they completed during time spent in France.

An American in Europe: The Photography Collection of Baroness Jeane von Oppenheim from the Norton Museum of Art

Feb. 24 - April 29

A selection of 132 prints from the Baroness's collection capture impressions of Europe shot through many American lenses prior to World War I through the present day.

The Art of William Edmondson

Edmondson's sculpting ability developed as a result of experimentation while he was a tombstone carver during the Great Depression. This is the first tour of the African-American's work in 19 years, and it is accompanied by an exhibition of photographs showing Edmondson at work.

The Maine Influence: Selected Works By N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, and James Wyeth

Three generations of the Wyeth family have captured Maine's gorgeous landscapes over the past century. The exhibition traces the influence that N.C. Wyeth had on both his son and grandson, and each of the painters provide a vivid masterclass in the use of watercolor.

The Walters Gallery

Manet: The Still-Life Paintings

The Musee d'Orsay first hosted this display devoted to Manet's still-life portraits. The Walters Gallery is the only American venue for these 55 works, which include drawings on the pages of private correspondence as well as some of the bouquets of flowers that Manet painted while confined to his room before he died.

Frank W. Benson: American Impressionist

It's fitting that the Peabody Museum profiles one of Salem's own. Though he grew up in the Massachusetts town, Frank W. Benson had an apprenticeship in Paris toward the end of the 19th century that influenced his style. The impressionist always strove to capture the different effects of light and shadow on his subjects, which included still lifes, outdoor wildlife scenes, and New Englanders interacting with nature.

Seen and Received: The Shakers' Private Art

You've probably never seen religious art quite like this. Though the Shakers frowned on art, many women in their community expressed their faith through intricately rendered ink and watercolor drawings. Many of these "gift drawings" were destroyed and only about 200 of them survive today. This is the first display of these works in a decade.
