Dahlia

October 16, 2000

Walking home from a late

dinner, I'm stopped

by Dahlia, a sun that defies

with pure elation,

another July Fourth celebration,

final rocket burst refusing

to touch down. And oh!

those petals - like spokes

in concentric wheels that spin

from the sheer force

of beauty, Dahlia riding

the air above this roped-in

plot, her center like an eye

wide open

under the reeling stars.
