September

September 6, 2000

See how sunlight weaves through the woods

to rest on one tree, illuminate

a single branch, so that each of its leaves

glistens in restless green. Odd how this

catches your eye only now (since

you didn't notice in June or July).

Make no mind -

this last remnant of summer sun will catch you

in its warp and in its weft,

warm you, stay with you

through winter. Don't you remember?

It always does. It's September.
