Tell-tale tails

August 29, 2000

Wolves can't talk, but they can say a lot to one another - and to you, too, if you know how to 'read' a wolf's tail. By observing wolf behavior, researchers discovered what different tail positions mean. Here are some of them:

Possible threat: Careful!

Defensive restraint: I'm wary of you.

Self-confidence: I feel good.

Certain threat: I'm ready for you!

Imposing attitude (sweeping side to side): Show me respect.

Intimidation with restraint: You're the boss!
