How to ensure a smooth bail-out

August 21, 2000

Here is a checklist of considerations workplace experts say can help secure a good reference and keep feelings unhurt when leaving a job:

*Check your employee handbook to see how much notice your company needs - and add to it if you can.

*Wrap up as many projects as possible, resist the temptation to kick off new ones.

*Offer to help train your replacement.

*Leave your workspace clean, and label and organize any materials you leave behind.

*Leave a written report describing all unfinished business - and some hard-copy guidelines for your successor.

*Ask for references (from boss and peers) before you leave.

*Thank your supervisor for opportunities and training.
